Women are significantly underrepresented in the highest ranks of health leadership. While women fill more than three-quarters of all healthcare jobs, they hold only 18 percent of hospital chief executive roles and 4 percent of health system chief executive roles, according to recent studies.
This disparity deprives the fields of health and medicine of the full range of talents, skills, and perspectives that gender equity affords. It undermines retention of high performers and contributes to blind spots in research, patient care, and workplace culture.
Investing in women leaders to move into the top levels of leadership will improve health for all.
